Chapman University is a private institution of higher learning in Orange, California. It is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The institution was established in 1861 as Hesperian College in Woodland, California. Its name changed several times during its early years—to Berkeley Bible Seminary in 1896, to California School of Christianity in 1921, and then to California Christian College in 1923. In 1934, the college was renamed Chapman College in honor of its most generous benefactor, C. C. Chapman, a local real estate investor, rancher, and church leader. The college relocated to Orange in 1954. It became Chapman University in 1991. Chapman athletic teams are called the Panthers.
