Charleston, College of, is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Charleston, South Carolina. It is the oldest institution of higher education in South Carolina and one of the oldest in the United States. It was founded in 1770 as a liberal arts college for white male students. The college began to admit white women in 1928 and Black men and women in 1968. The college’s athletic teams are called the Cougars.
