Concordia University is a public institution of higher learning in Montreal, Quebec. It was created in 1974 by the merger of Loyola College, which had existed since 1896, and Sir George Williams University, which was established in 1926. The resulting institution was named Concordia as a reflection of Montreal’s city motto, “Concordia Salus,” which means “well-being through harmony.” Although Montreal is one of the world’s largest French-speaking cities, classes at Concordia University are conducted in English.
