District of Columbia, University of the, is the only public institution of higher education in Washington, D.C. It was chartered in 1974 as a land-grant university. A land-grant university or college receives federal aid under the Morrill Act of 1862, which granted public lands to support education in agriculture and the mechanical arts. The university also serves as the official provider of adult education for the District of Columbia. The university’s athletic teams are called the Firebirds.
