Eastern Illinois University is a public, state-assisted institution of higher learning in Charleston, Illinois. It was established in 1895 as Eastern Illinois State Normal School. In 1921, it became Eastern Illinois State Teachers College. The college was renamed Eastern Illinois State College in 1947 and then Eastern Illinois University in 1957. Eastern Illinois athletic teams are called the Panthers.
