Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Ypsilanti, Michigan. It was founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School and was renamed Michigan State Normal College in 1899. It became Eastern Michigan College in 1956 and then Eastern Michigan University in 1959.

Teacher training has always been an important mission of the university, but Eastern Michigan also has become known for its outstanding programs in health administration and international business. In addition to its main campus in Ypsilanti, Eastern Michigan University operates campuses in Livonia, Jackson, Traverse City, Flint, Detroit, and Monroe. Eastern Michigan athletic teams are called the Eagles.
