Eastern Washington University

Eastern Washington University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Cheney, Washington, near Spokane. It was founded in 1882 as the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy. After Washington became a state in 1889, the academy became the State Normal School at Cheney. The school became Eastern Washington College of Education in 1937, then Eastern Washington State College in 1961, and finally Eastern Washington University in 1977. In addition to its main campus in Cheney, Eastern Washington also offers programs in Spokane and several other satellite offices throughout the state. Eastern Washington athletic teams are called the Eagles.
