Emerson College is a private, independent institution of higher learning in Boston. It was established in 1880 as Boston Conservatory of Elocution, Oratory, and Dramatic Art. In 1881, the name of the institution was changed to Monroe Conservatory of Oratory. In 1890, it was renamed Emerson College of Oratory in honor of its founding president, Charles Wesley Emerson, an orator, preacher, and teacher. The name was shortened to Emerson College in 1939. In addition to its main campus in Boston, Emerson also has facilities in Los Angeles and The Netherlands. The school’s athletic teams are called the Lions.
