Fayetteville State University

Fayetteville State University is a public, state-assisted institution of higher learning in Fayetteville, North Carolina. It was established in 1867 by a group of African Americans as the Howard School for the education of Black students. In 1877, the school became North Carolina’s first state-supported institution for the education of African American teachers and thus was renamed the State Colored Normal School. After several name changes, the school became Fayetteville Teachers College in 1939. In 1959, the curriculum was expanded to include fields of study other than teaching. The college was renamed Fayetteville State College in 1963 and Fayetteville State University in 1969. The college now admits students of all races. It became a part of the University of North Carolina in 1972. Fayetteville State athletic teams are called the Broncos.
