Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University

Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Tallahassee, Florida. A historically black school, it was founded in 1887 as State Normal College for Colored Students. The college’s name was changed to State Normal and Industrial College for Colored Students in 1891 and then to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes in 1909. It became Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, also called Florida A&M, in 1953. Florida A&M’s College of Law is in Orlando, Florida. Men’s athletic teams are called the Rattlers, and women’s teams are the Lady Rattlers.
