Governors State University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in University Park, Illinois, near Chicago. The university was founded in 1969. At first, it was made up entirely of juniors, seniors, and graduate students. However, in 2014, Governors State became a four-year university when it admitted its first freshman class. The university also opened its first on-campus residence and expanded its bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. Previously, Governors State’s undergraduate programs attracted students who had already earned college credit from other institutions, especially nearby community colleges. Many students at the university are working adults who commute to the campus for evening classes. Through partnerships with several community colleges, Governors State University also offers long-distance bachelor’s degree programs to students in locations inadequately served by four-year colleges.
