Guelph, << gwehlf, >> University of, is a public, provincially funded university in Guelph, Ontario. The institution was founded in 1964, when a new college of arts and sciences merged with three existing colleges—Ontario Agricultural College (founded in 1874), Ontario Veterinary College (1862), and Macdonald Institute (1904).
The University of Guelph manages agricultural education diploma programs at College d’Alfred, Kemptville College, and Ridgetown College. It also manages the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario, a group of provincial crop and livestock research stations and testing laboratories.
The university’s athletics teams are called the Gryphons. Notable alumni include astronaut Roberta Bondar, novelist Jane Urquhart, economist John Kenneth Galbraith, businessman A. M. “Mac” Cuddy, and musician Jane Siberry.
