Auckland, University of, is an institution of higher education in Auckland, on the North Island of New Zealand. The university has a number of campuses, including the City Campus in Auckland; Epsom Campus, Grafton Campus, and Tāmaki Campus, near City Campus; and the Tai Tokerau Campus at Whangarei. The university also operates the Leigh Marine Laboratory at Goat Island Marine Reserve, near Warkworth. Two additional locations are the University of Auckland at Kawakawa and the University of Auckland at Manukau.
The University of Auckland was founded in 1883 as part of the University of New Zealand. The university originally consisted of an old courthouse and jail, and most of its students enrolled part-time. Until the early 1930’s, the university concentrated mainly on teaching, with little academic research. The numbers of students and lecturers increased rapidly after World War II (1939-1945). In the 1960’s, the university started a large-scale building program to accommodate the new demand. In 1962, the University of New Zealand was abolished, and the University of Auckland became independent.
