Cape Town, University of, is the oldest university in South Africa. The main campus is on the slopes of Devil’s Peak in the community of Rondebosch, which is part of the city of Cape Town. Three other campuses lie in other parts of the city. The University of Cape Town is funded mainly by state funds and student fees. The institution was founded in 1829 as the South African College, a school for boys. During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the college offered an increasing number of university courses and it began admitting women. The University of Cape Town was formally established in 1918. The university actively opposed South Africa’s system of apartheid (racial segregation) (see Apartheid), particularly in higher education. Teaching at the University of Cape Town is conducted in English.
