Durham, University of, is an institution of higher education in Durham, England. It was founded in 1832. The university is organized into residential colleges. All students belong to one of these colleges, where they can mix with fellow students from a range of disciplines. These colleges are where students live and form a community, but they are not teaching colleges, as at Oxford University, for example. Durham students take classes within the university at large. Courses are taught on two campuses, one in the city of Durham, and the other in Stockton-on-Tees.
The university is a leading research institution in the United Kingdom. Its strongest research areas include archaeology, chemistry, East Asian studies, engineering, geography, history, music, physics, pure and applied mathematics, and theology.
