LeMond, Greg

LeMond, Greg (1961-…), an American bicycle racer, became the first American cyclist to win the Tour de France, the most famous bicycle road race in the world. LeMond first won the Tour de France in 1986. He repeated as winner in 1989 and again in 1990. He had finished second in the race in 1985. LeMond also won the world professional road racing championship in 1983 and in 1989.

Gregory James LeMond was born in Los Angeles. He started bicycle racing at the age of 14. In 1979, he became the first road racer to win three medals at the junior world championships. In 1980, LeMond joined a French road racing team and won his first major road race, in Switzerland, in 1983. A muscle disorder called mitochondrial myopathy forced LeMond to retire from competition in 1994.
