Southampton, University of, is an institution of higher education in Southampton, in the United Kingdom. The University of Southampton was founded as the Hartley Institution in 1862. It was named after its benefactor, Henry Robinson Hartley, who was heir to a wine merchant. The institution later changed its name to Hartley University College and moved from the center of Southampton to Highfield, a few miles or kilometers away. In 1952, the college received its charter and became the University of Southampton. The Southampton Oceanography Centre, a major center for research into marine sciences, was opened in 1996. It was renamed the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, in 2005.
The university has six campuses—five in Southampton and one in Winchester. The University of Southampton offers a range of degrees at both the graduate and postgraduate level, in such subjects as electronic and electrical engineering, nutrition, and computer science. The university is noted for its development of fiber optics and for its research into respiratory disease, allergy, and cancer (see Fiber optics ).
