Stellenbosch University is an institution of higher education in the town of Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa. It is one of three universities in the country created by the University Act, which was passed in 1916 and came into effect in 1918.

The Arts Department received its charter as a college in 1881, becoming the Stellenbosch College. In 1887, the name was changed to the Victoria College of Stellenbosch.
Stellenbosch University offers courses in a wide range of subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, both to residential students and those at a distance. The primary language of the university is Afrikaans, although facilities are provided for non-Afrikaans speakers.
