Reading, University of, is an institution of higher education in Reading, in the United Kingdom. Reading University was opened in 1892 as an extension college of the University of Oxford. The independent University of Reading was established in 1926 when a royal charter authorized the institution to award degrees of its own. The Faculty of Letters and Social Sciences opened in 1957. In 1972, Reading established the Industrial Research and Development Group, the first of its kind in the United Kingdom.
