The Braves originated in 1871 as the Boston Red Stockings of the National Association, the game’s first professional league. The National League replaced the National Association in 1876, and Boston became an original member. By the late 1880’s, the team was commonly known as the Beaneaters. Boston took its final name of the Braves in 1912.

The 1914 Braves were one of the most famous teams in baseball history. The Braves were in last place in mid-July but went on to win the National League pennant by 10 1/2 games. The “miracle” Braves then swept the heavily favored Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series.

The Braves played in Boston until the franchise moved to Milwaukee in 1953. In Milwaukee, the team won National League pennants in 1957 and 1958, and a World Series title in 1957. The Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966. The team suffered through mostly poor seasons in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The Braves rebounded in the 1990’s, however, winning five pennants (1991, 1992, 1995, 1996, and 1999) and one World Series (1995). Except for the strike-shortened 1994 season, the Braves won division titles every year from 1991 through 2005. The Braves won the World Series again in 2021.
