San Francisco Giants are a professional baseball team that plays in the National League (NL) West division of Major League Baseball (MLB). The Giants played their home games in Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California, from 1960 to 1999 before moving to the new Pacific Bell Park (now Oracle Park) in 2000.

The Giants originated in New York City in 1883 and moved to San Francisco in 1958. At the same time, the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles. Both teams had been among baseball’s most historic and successful teams while they played in New York. Both continued their success, and their rivalry, in California.

While in New York City, the Giants won 15 NL pennants and five World Series (1905, 1921, 1922, 1933, and 1954). Many of baseball’s most famous players and managers were part of New York Giants history. They included pitchers Joe McGinnity, Christy Mathewson, and Carl Hubbell; first basemen Bill Terry and Johnny Mize; outfielders Mel Ott and Willie Mays; and managers John McGraw and Leo Durocher

The Giants had winning seasons their first 14 years in San Francisco. Stars of those years included Mays, pitcher Juan Marichal, and first basemen Willie McCovey and Orlando Cepeda. The team won its first NL pennant in San Francisco in 1962.

Low attendance in the mid-1970’s almost resulted in the Giants’ moving to Toronto, Ontario. But new owners, including San Francisco businessman Bob Lurie, kept the team in San Francisco.

After numerous losing seasons from 1972 to 1986, the team won the NL West in 1987. In 1989, sluggers Will Clark and Kevin Mitchell led the Giants to the World Series, but they lost to the Oakland Athletics. In 1992, owner Bob Lurie arranged to sell the team to investors who planned to move the Giants to Saint Petersburg, Florida. However, MLB owners blocked the sale.

In 2002, the Giants made the playoffs as a wild card team and went on to win the NL pennant. The team lost to the Anaheim Angels (now the Los Angeles Angels) in the World Series. Stars of that Giants team included outfielder Barry Bonds and second baseman Jeff Kent. In 2010, the Giants won the World Series for the first time since moving from New York City. The Giants won the World Series again in 2012 and 2014. Stars of those teams included catcher Buster Posey, pitcher Madison Bumgarner, and third baseman Pablo Sandoval
