Texas Rangers are a professional baseball team that plays in the American League (AL) West division of Major League Baseball (MLB). The Rangers play their home games at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, a city between Dallas and Fort Worth.
The Rangers originated as the Washington Senators, a team that formed in 1961 as part of the AL’s first expansion. After the 1971 season, the Senators moved to Texas and became the Texas Rangers. The Rangers played at Arlington Stadium from 1972 to 1993. In 1994, the Rangers opened the Ballpark in Arlington, a stadium that served the team under various names through the 2019 season. Globe Life Field opened in 2020.
Early Rangers stars included Hall of Fame pitcher Ferguson Jenkins, first baseman Mike Hargrove, and outfielder Jeff Burroughs. Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan played for Texas during the final five years of his career, from 1989 to 1993. After many years of mediocrity, the team won its first AL West championship in 1996. That team featured star first baseman Will Clark, outfielder Juan González, and Hall of Fame catcher Iván Rodríguez.
In 2010, the Rangers won the AL West and advanced through the playoffs to reach the World Series for the first time. The Rangers lost to the San Francisco Giants, however, 4 games to 1. Texas returned to the World Series in 2011, but lost to the St. Louis Cardinals, 4 games to 3. Those Rangers ball clubs included star infielders Adrián Beltré and Michael Young, outfielder Josh Hamilton, and pitcher C. J. Wilson. In 2023, the Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks to win the World Series, 4 games to 1.
