Delaware State University is a publicly assisted university in Dover, Delaware. The Delaware General Assembly established it in 1891 as the State College for Colored Students. It is a land-grant college—that is, an agricultural or technical college that receives support from grants of federal land. The college was established under the Morrill Act of 1890, which expanded the land-grant program to support education for African American students. The state of Delaware changed the school’s name to Delaware State College in 1947 and to Delaware State University in 1993. The university’s athletic teams are called the Hornets.
