Drake University

Drake University is a private institution of higher learning in Des Moines, Iowa. The Disciples of Christ, a Protestant denomination, founded the university in 1881. It was named for Francis Marion Drake, a Civil War general, former Iowa governor, banker, railroad builder, and attorney. He was the first president of the university’s board of trustees.

Drake University athletic teams are called the Bulldogs. Every spring, the university hosts the Drake Relays, a major track and field meet. Well-known Drake alumni include opera singer Sherrill Milnes and former Iowa governors Robert D. Ray and Terry E. Branstad.
