Dubuque, University of

Dubuque, University of, is a private, professional university and theological seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. It maintains a focus in the liberal arts. The university has ties to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but it admits students of all religious backgrounds. Adrian Van Vliet, an American educator and clergyman, founded the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary in 1852. The original goal of the seminary was to train German-speaking church workers to serve the growing German immigrant population of the Midwest. The school became known as the University of Dubuque in 1920.

University of Dubuque athletic teams are nicknamed the Spartans. One well-known University of Dubuque alumnus is actor Tony Danza.
