Hardin-Simmons University is a private institution of higher learning in Abilene, Texas. Originally established by the Sweetwater Baptist Association, the university has been affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas since 1941. Founded in 1891 as Abilene Baptist College, the school was renamed Simmons College in honor of its first major donor, James B. Simmons, an American minister. The college became Hardin-Simmons University in 1934, in recognition of gifts from businessman John G. Hardin and his wife, schoolteacher Mary C. Funk. Men’s athletic teams are called the Cowboys, and women’s teams are the Cowgirls.
