Incarnate Word, University of the

Incarnate Word, University of the, is a private institution of higher learning in San Antonio. It was established in 1881 as a teacher-training school. In 1901, it became the Academy of the Incarnate Word, under the administration of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, a Roman Catholic religious order of women. The academy was renamed Incarnate Word College in 1909 and became a university in 1996. It admits both men and women.
