Denman, Lord (1874-1954), was governor general of Australia from 1911 to 1914. His term as governor general coincided with several important events in Australia’s history. A moderate, reforming Labor government was in power. It passed a number of social welfare measures, including workers’ compensation payments and maternity benefits. Australia’s economy prospered, and individual states encouraged immigration. One of the most significant developments that occurred during Denman’s term of office was the founding of Australia’s federal capital, Canberra.
Thomas Denman was born in London and received his education at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He succeeded to the family title and became Third Baron Denman on the death of his father in 1894.
