Hopetoun, Lord

Hopetoun, Lord (1860-1908), John Adrian Louis Hope, Seventh Earl of Hopetoun and First Marquess of Linlithgow, became the first governor general of Australia in 1901.

Hopetoun’s period as governor general was marked by the passage of the Immigration Restriction Act by the newly formed Australian government. Hopetoun disapproved of the measure, which had been introduced to promote the White Australia Policy (see White Australia policy ). This policy was designed to prevent immigration into Australia by non-Europeans.

Lord Hopetoun was born at Hopetoun, Scotland. He was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He succeeded to the family earldom in 1873. Hopetoun was governor of Victoria, Australia, from 1889 to 1895 but then returned to the United Kingdom, where he held the posts of paymaster general from 1895 to 1898 and lord chamberlain in 1898. He was also president of the Institution of Naval Architects from 1895 to 1900. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1902 after serving as governor general. Hopetoun then became secretary of state for Scotland in 1905. King Edward VII created Hopetoun Marquess of Linlithgow in 1902.
