Northcote, << NAWRTH kuht, >> Lord (1846-1911), Henry Stafford Northcote, Baron Northcote, was the third governor general of Australia, serving from 1904 until 1908. As governor general, he helped to unify the new country and promoted immigration to develop Australia’s economy.
Northcote was born on Nov. 18, 1846, in London and educated at Eton College and at Merton College, Oxford University. He joined the United Kingdom Foreign Office as a clerk in 1868. Northcote was elected as a Conservative member of Parliament for Exeter in 1880 and represented the constituency for the next 19 years. During this period, he held the government posts of financial secretary to the War Office in 1885 and 1886 and surveyor general of ordnance in 1886 and 1887. From 1899 to 1903, Northcote was governor general of Bombay (now Mumbai), India, focusing on the problems of famine and disease. He also introduced financial and administrative reforms, notably in relation to land revenue and municipal government. Queen Victoria raised him to the peerage in 1900, and he became Baron Northcote of Exeter. He died in England on Sept. 29, 1911.
