Tennyson, Lord (1852-1928), Hallam Tennyson, Second Baron Tennyson, was the second governor general of Australia. He was appointed governor of South Australia in 1899. After Governor General Hopetoun resigned in 1902, Tennyson became acting governor general until his appointment as full governor general was confirmed. He took up his post at the start of 1903 and left in early 1904, having requested only a one-year term.
Hallam Tennyson was the son of the famous poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. He was born in Twickenham, west London, on Aug. 11, 1852, and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge University, and the Inner Temple. After the poet’s death in 1892, the younger Tennyson inherited the family title. Hallam Tennyson wrote a biography of his father, Alfred Lord Tennyson: A Memoir, which was published in 1897. After his tour of duty in Australia, he edited a book of memoirs relating to the poet, titled Tennyson and His Friends (1911). Hallam Tennyson was knighted in 1899, was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1903, and became a privy councilor in 1905. He died on the Isle of Wight on Dec. 2, 1928.
