Turcotte, Jean-Claude

Turcotte, Jean-Claude, << toor KAWT, zhahn klohd >> (1936-2015), was appointed a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II in 1994. The pope had appointed Turcotte archbishop of Montreal, Quebec, in 1990.

Turcotte was born in Montreal. He was ordained a priest in 1959. He spent most of his career in the Montreal diocese, where he became known for his work with the poor and his active support of social justice. From 1965 to 1967, Turcotte served as diocesan chaplain of the Movement of Christian Workers, a group that promotes the rights of working-class people. He carried out several assignments in the Office of the Clergy from 1967 to 1974, working with seminary students and the clergy.

In 1974, Turcotte became director of the Office of Parochial Pastoral. He was appointed vicar general of the diocese and coordinator of pastoral work in 1981. Turcotte was ordained titular bishop of Suas and auxiliary bishop of Montreal in 1982. He died on April 8, 2015.
