KwaZulu-Natal, University of, is an institution of higher education in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It has four campuses in the Durban area and one in Pietermaritzburg. The University of KwaZulu-Natal was formed in 2004 through the merger of the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville. The University of Natal was founded in 1910 as Natal University College. In 1918, it became a college within the University of South Africa. The University of Natal became independent in 1949. The University of Durban-Westville was founded in the 1960’s as the University College for Indians. It gained university status in 1971 and was renamed the University of Durban-Westville the following year.
