Newcastle University is an institution of higher education in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, in the United Kingdom. The university was originally the Newcastle Division of the University of Durham. It became a separate university, the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1963. In 2006, the school changed its name to Newcastle University. The university offers a wide range of courses at graduate and postgraduate levels. Newcastle University is close to the center of the city, on a site surrounding the original Arrmstrong College building.
