Free State, University of the

Free State, University of the, is an institution of higher education in the province of Free State in South Africa. The university, often called UFS, has its main campus in Bloemfontein. It has an additional campus on the southern side of Bloemfontein that offers bridge programs—that is, programs that help college-age students work at a college level. The university’s Qwaqwa campus isin Phuthaditjhaba in eastern Free State. The university was founded in 1904 as the Grey College School. UFS took its current name in 2001. The university uses two languages for instruction, Afrikaans and English.

The university also has several research and development centers and its own astronomical observatory, the Boyden Observatory.
