Victoria University of Wellington is an institution of higher education in Wellington, New Zealand. The university originally was planned to commemorate the 60th year of the reign of Queen Victoria. It was created by an act of Parliament in 1897 and opened in 1899 as a college affiliated with the University of New Zealand. Victoria University became an independent university in 1962, taking the name Victoria University of Wellington. The university has campuses in Kelburn, Te Aro, and Pipitea.
The university places emphasis on New Zealand’s Māori heritage. The university’s Māori name is Te Herenga Waka, meaning the mooring place of canoes. The university’s name may be written as Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
