Hackett, Grant

Hackett, Grant (1980-…), was a champion Australian swimmer. He ranks among the greatest freestyle swimmers in the history of the sport. In major competitions during his career, Hackett won individual freestyle events ranging from 200 meters to 1,500 meters, as well as freestyle relays.

Hackett competed in the 2000, 2004, and 2008 Summer Olympic Games. In those games, he won a total of seven medals—three gold, three silver, and one bronze. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, he won gold medals in the 1,500-meter freestyle event and as a member of the Australian 800-meter freestyle relay team. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, he won the gold medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle event, as well as silver medals in the 400-meter freestyle event and as a member of the Australian 800-meter freestyle relay team. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, he won a silver medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle event and a bronze medal as a member of the Australian 800-meter freestyle relay team.

Hackett also enjoyed success at the Commonwealth Games. He won a gold medal and a silver medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia and 3 gold medals and 2 silver medals at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in England. From 1998 to 2015, Hackett won 10 gold medals, 6 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals at the FINA World Championships. FINA, the organization governing international competitive swimming, is now called World Aquatics. Hackett won a gold medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle event in 1998 in Australia, in 2001 in Japan, in 2003 in Spain, and in 2005 in Canada to become the first swimmer to win a gold medal in the same event four consecutive times at the FINA World Championships.

Hackett was born on May 9, 1980, in Southport, Australia. He made his first mark in world-class swimming in 1997, winning the 400-meter, 800-meter, and 1,500-meter freestyle events at the Pan Pacific Championships in Fukuoka. Hackett retired from competitive swimming in 2008. However, he returned to swimming in 2014 before retiring again in 2016.
