Philippines, University of the

Philippines, University of the, is an institution of higher learning in Quezon City, the Philippines. The university was founded in 1908 and began admitting students in 1909. In 1910, the Philippine Medical School (now the College of Medicine) became part of the university. The University of the Philippines (UP) system offers graduate and postgraduate degree courses in the arts and sciences.

UP Diliman, the largest university in the UP system, is in Quezon City. It specializes in the arts and sciences. UP Manila, the oldest campus of the UP system, specializes in the health and medical sciences and manages the Philippine General Hospital. UP Los Banos specializes in agriculture and the environmental sciences. UP Visayas specializes in fisheries and marine science education and research. UP Mindanao was established in 1995 and is known for its programs for Muslim and other cultural groups in the region. The UP Open University provides distance education through learning centers in the Philippines. Distance education involves the use of satellites, cable television, the Internet, and other technologies to transmit lectures and educational materials to many locations. UP Baguio seeks to enhance and preserve the cultural traditions of the Cordilla, Northern Luzon, and Cagayan Valley region. It was granted independence as a college in 1999.
