Kidman, Nicole

Kidman, Nicole (1967-…), is an Australian actress who has gained success in a broad range of roles. She has starred in many Australian and American motion pictures, as well as television shows and stage plays. Kidman won the Academy Award as best actress for her performance as the English author Virginia Woolf in The Hours (2002). Among her many other awards are several Emmy and Golden Globe awards.

Kidman was born on June 20, 1967, in Honolulu, Hawaii, where her father, a biochemist, was conducting cancer research. She grew up in Sydney, Australia. Kidman’s first professional role was in the Australian TV movie Bush Christmas (1983). She played leading roles in the movie Dead Calm (1989) and the TV miniseries Bangkok Hilton (1989). Kidman’s breakthrough came in the Hollywood movie Days of Thunder (1990), which starred the American actor Tom Cruise. Kidman and Cruise were married from 1990 to 2001. Kidman married the Australian musician Keith Urban in 2006.

Kidman’s other movies include Billy Bathgate (1991); Far and Away (1992); To Die For and Batman Forever (both 1995); The Portrait of a Lady (1996); The Peacemaker (1997); Eyes Wide Shut (1999); Moulin Rouge! and The Others (both 2001); Dogville and Cold Mountain (both 2003); The Stepford Wives and Birth (both 2004); The Interpreter and Bewitched (both 2005); Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006); The Invasion, Margot at the Wedding, and The Golden Compass (all 2007); Australia (2008); Nine (2009); and Rabbit Hole (2010).

Kidman’s later films include Trespass (2011); The Paperboy (2012); Hemingway & Gelhorn (2012); The Railway Man and Stoker (both 2013); Grace of Monaco (2014), in which she portrayed the Hollywood actress Grace Kelly; Before I Go to Sleep (2014); Queen of the Desert and Strangerland (both 2015); Lion (2016); and Being the Ricardos (2021), in which she played the American comedian Lucille Ball.

Kidman provided the voice for the penguin Norma Jean in the animated film Happy Feet (2006). She also acted in and co-produced the television series “Big Little Lies” (2017-2019).
