Crowe << kroh >> , Russell (1964-…), is an actor from New Zealand. He is known for the intensity of his performances. Crowe began his motion-picture career in Australia in 1990 and had become an international star by the end of the decade. He won the 2000 Academy Award as best actor for his performance in Gladiator (2000).
Crowe was born on April 7, 1964, in Wellington, New Zealand. He moved with his parents to Australia at the age of 4. Crowe returned to New Zealand with his parents when he was 14 years old. He held a variety of jobs in his early 20’s before starring in Australian productions of several musicals.
Crowe made his film debut in the Australian movie Prisoners of the Sun (1990). He gained international attention as the vicious leader of a neo-Nazi gang in Romper Stomper (1992). Crowe’s first American film was the Western The Quick and the Dead (1995). His other films from the 1990’s include Rough Magic (1995); L.A. Confidential (1997); The Insider (1999); and Mystery, Alaska (1999). Crowe’s films from the early 2000’s include Proof of Life (2000); A Beautiful Mind (2001); Master and Commander (2003); Cinderella Man (2005); A Good Year (2006); a remake of the 1957 Western 3:10 to Yuma (2007); American Gangster (2007); Body of Lies (2008); and State of Play (2009). Later movies in which he appeared include Robin Hood and The Next Three Days (both 2010); Les Misérables (2012); Man of Steel (2013); Noah, The Water Diviner, and Winter’s Tale (all 2014); The Nice Guys (2016); and Unhinged (2020).
