Blanchett, Cate (1969-…), is an Australian actress known for her aristocratic bearing. Her career spans the theater, motion pictures, and television. Blanchett won Academy Awards for her performances in the films The Aviator (2004) and Blue Jasmine (2013). She played the American actress Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator. Blanchett has won many other acting awards, including several Golden Globes.
Catherine Elise Blanchett was born on May 14, 1969, in Melbourne, Australia, to an American father and an Australian mother. She began acting in high school. Blanchett studied briefly at the University of Melbourne. She then attended the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). After graduating from NIDA in 1992, she made her professional stage debut in Caryl Churchill’s play Top Girls in Sydney, Australia. She soon established herself as one of Australia’s leading stage actresses. From 2008 to 2012, Blanchett was an artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company.
Blanchett made her motion-picture debut in Paradise Road (1997). Her next movie, Thank God He Met Lizzie (1997), earned her a best supporting actress award from the Australian Film Institute. Blanchett gained international recognition as Queen Elizabeth I in the historical movie Elizabeth (1998). She played Elizabeth I again in Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007).
Blanchett’s other movies include Oscar and Lucinda (1997); An Ideal Husband, Pushing Tin, and The Talented Mr. Ripley (all 1999); The Gift (2000); Bandits, The Shipping News, and Charlotte Gray (all 2001); The Missing (2003); Babel, The Good German, and Notes on a Scandal (all 2006); I’m Not There (2007); Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (both 2008); and Robin Hood (2010). Her later films include Hanna (2011); The Monuments Men (2014); Carol, Cinderella, and Truth (all 2015); Song to Song (2017); and Tár (2022).
In addition, Blanchett played the princess Galadriel in several movies based on the books of English author J. R. R. Tolkien. The movies include “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy (series of three), released from 2001 to 2003, and “The Hobbit” trilogy, released from 2012 to 2014. Blanchett voiced a character in the animated movie How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014). She also has appeared on a number of television programs throughout her career.
