Arizona Cardinals are a professional football team that plays in the National Football League (NFL) . The team competes in the West Division of the National Football Conference. The Cardinals play their home games at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
The Cardinals are the oldest franchise in the National Football League. The team was founded in 1898 in Chicago. In 1920, it became an original member of the American Professional Football Association (APFA). In 1922, the APFA changed its name to the National Football League. The Chicago Cardinals won the 1925 league championship.
The team had only two winning seasons from 1926 to 1946. The Cardinals then won the NFL championship in 1947 and a division title in 1948. That team became famous for its “Million Dollar Backfield” of quarterback Paul Christman, halfbacks Elmer Angsman and Marshall Goldberg, and fullback Pat Harder.
In 1960, the Cardinals moved to St. Louis. In 1988, the team again moved, and began playing its home games in Tempe, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. The team was called the Phoenix Cardinals until the name was changed to the Arizona Cardinals in 1994. In 2006, the Cardinals began playing at the University of Phoenix Stadium (now State Farm Stadium) in Glendale. From 1949 to 2007, the Cardinals made the playoffs only four times. In 2009, the Cardinals played in Super Bowl XLIII, but lost the game to the Pittsburgh Steelers .

Pat Tillman , who played with the Cardinals from 1998 to 2001, was killed in the Afghanistan War . Recent stars have included defensive end Calais Campbell, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, quarterback Kyler Murray, and cornerback Patrick Peterson.
