Denver Broncos are a professional football team that plays in the National Football League (NFL). The Broncos compete in the West Division of the American Football Conference. The team plays its home games at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado.
Denver began play in 1960 as an original member of the American Football League (AFL). The team became a member of the National Football League when the AFL and NFL merged in 1970. Denver achieved its first winning season in 1973 and made its first playoff appearance in 1977.
Denver established itself as a major power in the NFL when it acquired quarterback John Elway in 1983. Elway led the Broncos to five Super Bowls. Elway’s Broncos lost the first three games, but won Super Bowl XXXII (played in 1998) and Super Bowl XXXIII (played in 1999). Denver later won Super Bowl 50 (played in 2016).
Denver Broncos legends have included running back Terrell Davis (1995-2001), Elway (1983-1998), linebacker Tom Jackson (1973-1986), running back Floyd Little (1967-1975), linebacker Karl Mecklenburg (1983-1994), and wide receiver Rod Smith (1995-2006). Recent stars have included quarterback Peyton Manning, linebacker Von Miller, and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas.
