CSX Corporation operates one of the largest railroad networks in North America. The network includes about 21,000 miles (34,000 kilometers) of track. CSX trains haul freight to ports in the eastern and midwestern United States and in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The corporation has headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida.
CSX was incorporated in 1978 for the purposes of a merger between Seaboard Coast Line Industries Inc., based in Jacksonville, Florida, and Chessie Systems, Inc., of Cleveland, Ohio. These companies, both operators of railroad networks, merged in 1980. In 1998, CSX expanded its network when it and Norfolk Southern Corporation divided between themselves most of the assets of the major Eastern freight carrier Conrail. CSX and Norfolk Southern continue joint operation of Conrail as a local rail freight carrier serving Detroit, Philadelphia, and cities in New Jersey.
