The American politician and journalist Henry Jarvis Raymond and the American writer George Jones founded The New-York Daily Times in 1851. The paper was popular among serious readers who sought objective news coverage. In 1896, Adolph Simon Ochs, an American journalist, bought the paper. Its name was changed to The New York Times that same year. Ochs marketed his newspaper as an alternative to the popular tabloid papers of the time by claiming to publish only “the news that’s fit to print.” He avoided sensational stories and instructed his editors to publish news that was as free from prejudice as possible. Ochs also added many new features to the paper, including The New York Times Magazine on Sundays in the print version, and the Saturday Review of Books and Art (now called The New York Times Book Review). Today, The New York Times Book Review is a weekly supplement to the Sunday paper and is also sold separately.
