Roy << WAH >>, Patrick (1965-…), a Canadian hockey player, ranks among the greatest goaltenders in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL). During his career, Roy played in 1,029 regular-season games and had 551 regular-season victories. Both of these totals were NHL records for goalies at the time he retired. Roy won more career NHL playoff games (151) than any other goalie.

Roy starred on four Stanley Cup winners, with the Montreal Canadiens in 1986 and 1993 and the Colorado Avalanche in 1996 and 2001. Roy won the Conn Smythe Award three times as the Most Valuable Player in the playoffs. He also won the Vezina Trophy three times as the league’s outstanding goaltender.

Patrick Jacques Roy was born on Oct. 5, 1965, in Quebec City, Quebec. He played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) from 1982 to 1985. Montreal drafted him in the third round in 1984. He joined Montreal during the 1984-1985 season. Roy was traded to Colorado during the 1995-1996 season. He retired after the 2002-2003 season. Roy was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.

From 2006 to 2013, Roy was variously the head coach, general manager, and co-owner of the Quebec Ramparts of the QMJHL. He served as head coach and vice president of hockey operations for the Colorado Avalanche from 2013 to 2016. Roy was awarded the Jack Adams Trophy as the NHL’s coach of the year for the 2013-2014 season. In 2024, Roy became head coach of the New York Islanders.
