Hollingworth, Peter John (1935-…), was the governor general of Australia from 2001 to 2003. From 1990 to 2001, he served as the Anglican archbishop of Brisbane, Queensland.
Hollingworth was born on April 10, 1935, in Adelaide, South Australia. In 1953, he was drafted into national service with the military and was assigned to serve in a clergyman’s office. Later, he studied theology at the University of Melbourne, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1960. He was ordained an Anglican deacon that same year, and a priest in 1961. Between 1960 and 1964, he was deacon in charge—and then priest in charge—of St. Mary’s Anglican Church in North Melbourne, Victoria.
In 1964, Hollingworth began working for the Brotherhood of St. Laurence, a social work organization. Through the years, he became known as a strong advocate for the poor and disadvantaged. Hollingworth served as executive director of the brotherhood from 1980 to 1990. In 1980, he became canon of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne. From 1985 to 1990, he was bishop of the Inner City, also in the diocese of Melbourne. In 1989, he was elected archbishop of Brisbane. He began work as archbishop in 1990. In 1991, he was named Australian of the Year.
