Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies is a conservative organization that seeks to influence individuals involved in the United States legal system. Its members include judges, lawyers, law students, and law professors. The organization promotes limited government, the separation of government powers, and states’ rights. It believes that the role of government is the protection and preservation of individual freedom. It also believes that courts have the duty to interpret the Constitution strictly when trying cases. The society encourages its members to become involved in local, state, and national affairs.
The society sponsors a number of events, including conventions, debates, panel discussions, and lectures. It also has a number of practice groups that debate and analyze legal issues in such specialized areas of law as civil rights, administrative law, and telecommunications. In addition to their analyses of issues, the groups follow current legal cases and examine legal strategies that would promote the organization’s goals.
The Federalist Society was founded in 1982 by conservative law students at Yale University, the University of Chicago, and Harvard University. It is based in Washington, D.C.
