Hewitt, Lleyton (1981-…), was an Australian tennis star. Hewitt’s greatest success came in the early 2000’s. He won the US Open in 2001 and the Wimbledon championship in England in 2002. He also won the 2000 men’s doubles championship at the US Open with partner Max Mirnyi of Belarus. Hewitt was ranked number one in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) from 2001 to 2003. He reached the finals of the US Open in 2004 and of the Australian Open in 2005, losing both matches.
Lleyton Glynn Hewitt was born on Feb. 24, 1981, in Adelaide, Australia. He played Australian Rules football until the age of 13, when he decided to concentrate on tennis. He turned professional in 1998. Hewitt retired as a singles player after competing in the 2016 Australian Open. He then assumed the position of captain of the Australian Davis Cup team. The Davis Cup is awarded each year to the nation that wins the world’s men’s team tennis championship. After his retirement from singles competition, Hewitt continued playing doubles matches in professional tournaments until 2020.
