Sununu, John Edward (1964-…), was a member of the United States Senate from 2003 to 2009. Sununu, a Republican, represented New Hampshire. Before becoming a senator, Sununu served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Sununu was born on Sept. 10, 1964, in Boston and grew up in Salem, New Hampshire. His father, John H. Sununu, was governor of New Hampshire from 1983 to 1989 and then served as chief of staff to President George H. W. Bush from 1989 to 1991.
John E. Sununu graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in 1986 and a master’s degree in 1987, both in mechanical engineering. In 1991, he earned a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard University Graduate School of Business.
Sununu held several high-technology jobs, including design engineer for a microwave electronics firm and chief financial officer for a manufacturer of automation systems. He first ran for public office in 1996 and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He won reelection in 1998 and 2000. As a representative, Sununu maintained a conservative voting record. He served as vice chairman of the House Budget Committee and as a member of the Appropriations Committee. In 2002, Sununu won election to the U.S. Senate, and he took office in 2003. He failed to win reelection in 2008.
